On Wednesday, December 7 as a class we took a trip to Blue Flame thinking which is in downtown Grandrapids. The trip overall was very informative and I learned a lot about graphic design and how much work it is. Some of the things that I took away from the trip were things such as how their work spaces are and how some work in cubicles while others work in more of a modern feel with desks lined up by each other. Another thing that I learned from the trip was their process from start to finish with their projects and how they start with a big idea and break it down. I found it very cool how they gave us examples of companies who they have worked and some of the companies I recognized which made me realize that maybe I had seen some of Blue Flames thinkings work without knowing. While giving us the presentation something that stuck out to me is the thing he said about how when they comment on something that we are working on and show us some flaws in our designs, we shouldnt take it personal we should see it as them helping us and in no way are they trying to attack us as a person. Overall the trip was something that I enjoyed, I learned about how the job seems a lot more fun than I imagined. If I had to choose one thing that I thought was the most important that the man said at Blue Flame Thinking was how he said that it dosent matter about the paycheck, if we love doing something that we should do it no matter what.

For this project we were tasked to create a greeting card that we would then later sell. We were all given a topic to create the card around and my topic was a Graduation card. One principle of design that i used in my graduation card is repetition. I used repetition when I used multiple graduation hats to show depth in my card in the placement of the hats. I showed many elements of design in my graduation card but one of the elements is shape. I used shape when i turned and shaped the squares and rectangles that made up the top of the hat to make it look as if the hat is turned away from your view. Another element I used is space. I used space when I spaced the hats apart to not heavily favor one side.
From this art piece the artists is trying to pass along the message to you of the importance of helping the homeless. I do not believe that this artist was homeless but I believe that maybe he got his motivation from a relative or friend that once in his or her life may have been homeless. While looking at this art piece questions were racing through my head that the author may be trying to ask me such as, are you throwing things away that maybe those who are less fortunate as you may find very valuable, or are we just skipping over the homeless that are on the streets asking for money because we look at them as if they aren't humans? As I thought of these questions the only answer that I could think of is “Yes.” We are throwing away something that could easily be used and we are just kinda stepping over the homeless as if they aren't there, and that maybe if we just leave them alone they will eventually disappear. In this art piece Loren Naji the artist decided to make his sculpture out of re purposed wood. He chose to do this because he got the wood from abandoned homes in Michigan and Ohio and he wanted to show that those things that are abandoned can be used by others that are maybe less fortune and can put those old things to good use. The artists could have easily made this art piece out of other items such as things he could have bought at the store but he believed that he would get his message across a lot easier if he would be able to show us right there about what he could make from thrown away things which is completely free. While viewing this art piece I had wished that the author would have told the viewers a bit more about himself and why he chose to make this more. I know that he gave a small statement regarding that he wanted to bring more awareness to the homeless in Michigan and in the US, but I wish he would have told us a little more about his backstory such as if he had someone in his family homeless or if he had been homeless at once that pushed him more to create this sculpture. I believe that the artist decided to live in his art piece because he knew it would bring more attention towards it and spread the word of the problem more easily. After seeing this sculpture I realised that there is more homeless that I knew about in this country and state, we need to pay more attention to the homeless and give them what they need. I believe that this art piece will live on longer than just the 2016 art prize. The message that the piece carries along with it is greater than the piece itself and is something that I and others will always remember. The number 97,642 which is the number of homeless in Michigan is haunting and those who are fortunate to have the money to have a house, clean house, ac during the summer and heating in the winter should help those that are less fortunate.
In this assignment we were tasked to design and screen print our designs onto t-shirts using ink, a squeegee, and a printing screen. The word was meant to describe either what kind of person we are or something that we enjoy to do.I chose to use the word Venture which is a synonym to adventure. I love to travel and see the world whenever I get the chance. The font that I chose to use I designed with the help of a couple others. I used the arrows on the letters to indicate movement which is what adventure is all about. I hope that while my audience views this shirt they are forced to look up the word and learn what it is all about. I hope that they are able to connect my font design, the word and why I chose to use this font.

Line is being used in this image to show the depth of this image. Lines that are skinnier and smaller appear to be further back in this image and the thicker larger lines are closer up. This image consists of only lines no other shapes. | Shape is used hear because this image is a collage of shapes all different colors and sizes that makes up a larger image. This consists of geometric shapes such as triangles and rectangles. |
